About Counseling
Confidentiality
Counseling or therapy sessions typically span a duration of 45 to 50 minutes. Generally, these sessions are often scheduled to take place on a weekly basis; however, the frequency of sessions is a topic that we can openly discuss during our initial meeting. The first few sessions will be primarily utilized for gathering essential information, which will help me to better understand your unique circumstances and how I can effectively support you. I assure you that I will give you my full attention and will genuinely honor your time during each session.
Once we have gathered adequate information, we will collaboratively define achievable goals and begin making tangible progress towards these aspirations. At times, I may assign "homework" tasks for you to complete outside of our scheduled session time. This will provide you with an invaluable opportunity to practice and refine the skills that you are learning during our sessions together.
As a client-centered therapist, I will work at your pace to accomplish the goals that you have established. I utilize a strength-based solution-focused treatment modality, and I will help you envision and create a preferred future.
In general, the law provides robust protections for the confidentiality of all communications that occur between a client and myself as their therapist. This means that no specific information can be disclosed to any third party without obtaining prior written permission from the client in question.
However, I am required by law to break confidentiality in the following circumstances:
If I suspect child abuse or dependent adult or elder abuse, I am required by law to report it immediately to the appropriate authorities.
If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person(s), I must notify police and inform the intended victim(s).
If a client intends to harm himself or herself, I will make every effort to work with the individual to maintain their safety. However, if the client is unable to stay safe, additional measures may need to be taken to ensure safety.
